Lago Mar’s Connection to the Military

By: Debbie Banks, Lago Mar Resort and Club

Hi! Since this month is National Military Appreciation Month, I decided to blog about Lago Mar‘s connection to the military!

My own personal connection is my membership in the Tiffany Circle of the Red Cross. Tiffany circle members are philanthropists who contribute $10,000 annually to their local Red Cross. Each year we have a summit in Washington D.C. and last year I had the privilege to meet and have my picture taken with one of the Seal Team 6 who killed Bin Laden!

This past February I was fortunate enough to attend the first International Tiffany Circle Event in London. The main event was held at the Hampton Court Palace, and it was a magnificent evening! The Red Cross will always be near and dear to my heart!

Another connection Lago Mar has to the military is with our Chief Financial Officer, Gerry Belisle, who I eat lunch with most everyday. He served time in the military, joining the International Guard in 1959 and then switching to the Air Force in 1961 and then back to the International Guard in 1962. He was discharged in 1964. He served during the years of the Berlin Crisis and was on active duty in Germany as an administrative specialist to the Post Office.

Another member our Lago Mar Family, Cary Droze, served in the Air Force for 6 years. She was stationed in Homestead and worked as an air traffic controller and then moved to serving as a photographer. This was during the 1980’s, and she was chosen to photograph President Reagan as he was giving awards to DEA agents who had accomplished a lot in South and Central America in the fight against drug trafficking.

One last interesting military story I have to share is that we just had a wedding a few months ago where the groom was in full uniform, as was the father and the grandfather of the bride. The father of the bride is actually a retired 3 star General. During one part of the ceremony, the bride and groom walked under crossed swords. What a beautiful wedding!

I hope everyone is having a great Memorial Day Weekend! The weather is supposed to be perfect here in Fort Lauderdale. So excited!
